This is the first book by Julia with her mom Patsy. It starts with basketweave and continues through some simple stitches. Have you ever done a T-stitch? I love it, but what about a filled T-stitch? How about a twisted Smyrna Cross? She charts different sizes of Rhodes for you including hearts and even a 16x14 Amadeus heart. There's lots of great stitches in this 57 page 4-1/4 x 11" spiral bound book.

This book is a wonderful book to read when you've laid your stitching down and want some inspiration. Filled with color photographs of 19th century pieces and techniques, Gail Marsh does a stunning job showing you canvas work, surface embroidery, whitework, fancy work and how stitching was used to teach. She also shows you some of the tools used in the 19th century. There are stitches shown, however no full projects are given. The advanced stitcher will be able to apply many of these techniques to their own work but beware! The rest of us will be craving more and purchasing more books to learn! :-) Hardcover, 191 pages

Backgrounds & Such by Julia Key H. Snyder
This is the second book by Julia and it'll give you some great background stitch ideas. Instead of just giant scotch or bargello, she'll explain how to do plaids, stripes, random snowflakes, and then there are some cool repeating patterns like acorns, crosses, double flowers, corners, lattice pattern, line design and others. Her "& Such includes more stitches that also gives you ideas of places to use them such as blankets, baskets, bushes, grass, water, corduroy pants, trees, borders, more backgrounds...it just keeps going.

She includes blank graph paper on the right side of each page which of course I would use to doodle my own charts on using the stitches on the left hand side. This is a 53 page booklet, wire bound and it's about 4 x 11-1/2 so it's easy to tuck into your tote bag.

Backgrounds One, Compiled by Ruth Schmuff, Janice McGuire
Ruth Schmuff's book Backgrounds, Volume One is now in the shop! Weighing in at nearly 4 lbs., keep in mind that we'd be happy to ship any of our books to you via Media Mail. This book has 481 different repeat patterns suitable for backgrounds or any other area you want a repetitive pattern. The stitches are sorted on the repeat of the pattern, from one stitch to 40 stitches wide. This book is also available on CD. Price of the book is $65. Price of the CD's are $28 - three are in stock and will not be re-ordered.

My take on this book? As you leaf through the first few pages, you're going to think, "Hey, I could come up with these, this is no big deal." But remember, those are the single stitch repeats. Of course you could do that. Then there's some stripes, you could do that on your own too. But when you enter the complicated repeats - 5 threads wide by 10 threads high, or 8 x 8 or the 14 x 10 pattern on page 379 - you'll probably be glad for this book! 481 pages, spiral-bound for easy use, heavy duty covers. THE FIRST SIX will be sold for $60. After that, the price will be $65 as suggested by Ruth Schmuff.

Beginner's Guide to Stumpwork by Kay Dennis
This is the first of 3 books (so far) by Kay Dennis regarding stumpwork. It's a great beginner book and you CAN learn these techniques. The instructions and photos are clear and you'll be delighted with your results. Just look at the front cover for the kinds of things you'll learn - leaves, berries, birds, butterflies and more. I liked this book the first time I saw it and be sure to look at their other ones.

Bling, Glitz and Glamour for Needlepoint by June McKnight
June McKnight came out with a new book called Bling, Glitz and Glamour for Needlepoint. This book showcases ways to add “bling” to our needlepoint using beads, sequins, rhinestones, crystals, and pearls. Most of the book are stitches with the “bling” added in as part of the stitch. Some of them are creatively made from the beads. For example, I’m sure you’ve seen a wreath made entirely of beads. You can see some great examples right here http://junemcknight.com/bling.html

Canvas Embellishment; The Sequel - Great Stitches for Needlepoint by Linda Corirossi
Some of the stitches shown in one chapter are repeated in another to remind the needlepointer that a stitch given in one area can easily be used in another by simply changing the fiber, the color or texture. The book is designed for the needlepointer who knows some of the basic stitches and wants to expand their knowledge and is looking for ways to add dimension, contrast and texture on the painted canvas. This has been a very popular book. Comb-bound book, 120 pages, includes stitches for clothing; building and architecture; flowers and plants; trims, accents and decorative stitches; beards, hair and fur and backgrounds.

Celtic, Viking and Anglo-Saxon Embroidery by Jan Messent
WOW! This book is an artist's dream! I knew when I ordered it that this is the type of stitching reference book that you turn to for inspiration NOT for stitches! Jan Messent has researched ancient embroideries and created mixed-media embroideries to celebrate all she learned. Of course she also wrote this exquisite book that you'll turn to whenever you want to revel in the beauty of historical needlework in a contemporary presentation. If you have a chance to leaf through this book, please do!

Christmas Stitches for Needlepoint by June McKnight
I like to think that these were the first stitch idea books out and also in mini travel version. They're wonderful, bound at the top with wire so they sit flat and have lots of ideas on how to use stitches in them. It's a good book to page through and read, then go back when you need to find that "particular stitch". There's a lot more of these, but Christmas is always a popular one. Try the Architectural stitches too - I used that one on my house canvas.

Colorful Backgrounds Book by June McKnight
June McKnight's latest book, published in 2013, will show you different backgrounds in colored threads! We all come to a screeching halt when we consider a background stitch and color - now you can page through June's mini book and consider what you see IN COLOR in this spiral bound book. Just like her last book, June shows you the stitch in a beautiful clear large graph AND tells you what thread and color she used in case you want to recreate it just that way. Otherwise, just use the book for inspiration because you can clearly see how the stitch works up. See pages of it on her website here http://junemcknight.com/colorfulbackgrounds/Colorf ulBackgrounds.html

Colorful Stitches for Overdye Threads by June McKnight
Spiral bound, 141 pages. This is one of June’s little books that are so convenient to have nearby. She explains the multiple terms used in describing threads and dyed threads, types of dyeing techniques, how certain threads take to dyes, and hints on manipulating color in overdyed threads. She then gives you just under 100 pages showing on one side a stitched worked in an overdyed thread and the graphed version of that stitch on the facing page. This can give the stitcher an idea of what their thread will look like in that stitch. You might also fall in love with some of the colors shown and luckily, she names them for you. You’ll enjoy this new tiny treasure from June.

Creative Canvas Couching by Ann Strite-Kurz
Published in May 2005, this newest book by Ann is a must have for the serious stitcher. Happily a CD is enclosed so that you can review all the pictures on your computer in color, with detail on some as you follow along in the book! (Black and white photos are included in the book.)

The first half of the book details a wealth of current projects done by many needle artists using various couching and laying techniques. This will lead the reader to great "lightbulb" moments. The second half of the book gives actual techniques and patterns for couching and laid work. A full project "Star Light, Star Bright" is also included with the colored photo on the back cover.

Ann has outdone herself again with this wealth of information and we strongly recommend this spiral bound book for your stitching library!

Darn Fillings by Julia Key Snyder
This is Julia's fourth book and this one is filled with laid stitches. Julia suggests you lay a base first such as threads 2 x 2 in a lightweight thread and shows this in her graphs. She then suggests different "toppings" for the base that the stitcher will be familiar with. The book is set up by the count of the base stitches, for example, over 2 threads, over 4 threads, over 8 threads, and then the stitches that will fit well over these bases are graphed and shown to you. The larger areas would do well in a background while some of the smaller ones would be good for anything you wanted with detail work. Think of a woven basket - that's one of the fun ones here. She also gives you 8 pages of "Create Your Own" bases so that you can see the actualy count I imagine over the canvas threads. There's a section of 22 darning patterns with my favorite being dog bones (!)and her favorite heart and cross blackwork pattern.

This is a 63 page, wire bound book measuring 4-1/4 x 11" like Julia's other books. I very much like the idea of laying a base of stitches and then stitching over them for a fuller effect.

Distinctive Presentations in Needle Art - a Complete Guide to Professional Finishing for Your Needlework by Marcia S. Brown
Marcia Brown, the owner of the Binding Stitch is a finishing artist. Many of us enjoy the art of the needle but Marcia loves to finish and it shows in the beauty of her work. This book has drawings, pictures, excellent instructions and good tips. If you're interested in having your pieces look professionally finished, then following the directions here will give you a beautifully finished piece. Blocking & sizing, construction of pieces, pillows & cushions, neckrolls, options such as shirring-insets-flange-etc., doorstop, frame, 3D standing figures including weighting them, stockings, twisted cord, roped cord, bell pulls, rugs, fringe, small items, lined cases, round/oval Styrofoam forms and final touches are all covered. This book is softcover and is 195 pages. May need to be re-ordered so please expect a wait.

The best praise I can give Marcia is that years ago, I took a class that included watching her finish the class piece into a neckroll pillow. When I finished stitching my piece OVER A YEAR LATER, I was able to follow her written instructions and actually finish my pillow AND it looks good. I expect you'll have the same results with this book.

Elizabethan Stitches - A Guide to Historic English Needlework by Jacqui Carey
The author has researched many pieces of needlework, both canvas and linen, and seeks to explain the stitches used then and now. Apparently in some instances we do them differently now! This is a paperbound book, 160 pages, with color photos of the pieces she studied (24 case studies) and clear great photographs of the stitches themselves and how to duplicate them (approximately 36). I mean really, don't you want to know how to do the Elizabethan tubular Ceylon stitch? Looks great to me! At $54.95 this is a book that will be enjoyed by a reader interested in the history of stitches that wants to try them too.

Even More Stitches for Effect by Suzanne Howren & Beth Robertson
This book is an invaluable reference for all needlepointers of any experience level. Where else can you look up "water" and have somebody suggest stitches and sometimes even fibers to use! I wholeheartedly suggest that you add all three books (Stitches for Effect, More Stitches for Effect, Even More Stitches for Effect) to your library. For traveling, use their handy small sized "Stitches To Go" which has all their stitches from every book graphed out without all the text. You'll LOVE these books. I do! First Things First by Julia Snyder
This is a great book for a newer needlepointer. However, the stitches in the back are for anybody! These are NOT the simplest stitches (that’s also a warning for those thinking this is a great one for newbies…let me recommend some beginner books for them.) There are 25 pages of notes for beginners covering canvas types, needles, types of threads, laying threads, beginning and ending threads, continental and basketweave, and beading. Then the stitches graphed (usually 2 per page) include: Algerian Eye, Alternation Cashmere #2, Alternating Oblong Cross, Arrowhead, Baby Blocks, Backstitch, Bargello Swirls #6, Brick Over 2 and Over 4, Byzantine over 2 and over 3, Cameo, Cashmere, Corduroy #7, Criss Cross Hungarian #3, Cross Stitch, Diagonal Mosaic, Diagonal Hungarian, Diamond Leviathan, Double Brick over 2 and over 4, Double Cross and Double Cross Small, Extended Brick over 4, Gingham #5, Gingham #8, Hungarian Diamond #10, Hungarian Ground, Jacquard Variation, Jockey Cap, Kalem, Knit Stitch, Large Cross Stitch, Lazy Daisy, Leaf Stitch, Leviathan Cross, Moorish #12, Mosaic, Mosaic Check, Oblong Cross, Parisian Double, Parisian, Plaited, Pumpkin, Scotch Check, Scotch, Slanted Gobelin, Smyrna Cross, Staggered Mosaic #4, Star Stitch #2, Straight Gobelin and Variation, Trellis #14, Turkey Work, Upright Cross and Upright Cross Large, Weave #13, Wide Cashmere, Woven Double, and Woven Stitch. Icelandic Patterns in Needlepoint
If you can read a chart and do the tent stitch, you can conquer anything in this book. I loved this book because I like all those icelandic type sweaters - you know the kinds with reindeers and patterns in them. This is just like that but in needlepoint. There's lots of fun charts in here and tapestries too. The book starts out with spot motifs including things you'd see on samplers like birds, windmills, quilt type patches, flowers, and badly designed horses. They teach you how to plan out repeating designs. There are icelandic squares and knots, which remind me of celtic knots, a vase, more birds, and a dragon. All of these are in multi colors and just phenomenal.

Projects include pink oblong cushion, autumn pair of cushions, grandmother's cushion, more oblong cushions, (different colors, square type florals) tile cushion, round cushion, foxglove cushion (the only one that's not geometric in design), blue tapestry and then astonishing bed coverlets in flaming oranges and yellows and blues and blacks with a hunter, dog, stag, falcon, mythical beasts. They also provide a chart of a knight on horseback, bishop at table, and an idea for a tapestry to stitch them in, borders for bed coverlets, reindeer square and golden dragon with snakes square. Whew! That's a lot!

My Canvas Embroidery Notebook by Susan Ettl
Please! Don't be fooled by the title of this book. This is NOT a project diary book. This is an excellent book for the beginner that wants a full detailed explanation of the why, how and what about...questions that come out when you're alone and your teacher isn't there to help.

This book begins with the basics of supplies, threading your needle, and goes into more complex issues such as types of fibers, elements of design, and ends with a good assortment of stitches. I would recommend this for any stitcher interested in a strong understanding of the basics of needlepoint - or canvas embroidery as it should be called.

New Twists on Needlework Embellishment
Suzanne Howren and Beth Robertson take you right through basics on canvas embellishment – they’re not talking about playing up your canvas with fancy stitches and fun fibers – they’re talking about adding design elements to create shapes and bring objects to the foreground of the design. The authors cover:

Padding – what to pad with and how to pad...Appliqué including visible and invisible stitching...Couching – what to couch with, how to couch threads...Altered threads – twisted cord, creating new colors, ruching, threading wire through threads, brushing up threads... Beading - what kind of stitches attach beads well, what ways you can attach them, and loom work...Found objects and where to find them are discussed - great ideas...Backgrounds are suggested including color washing or putting fabric behind open canvas – something I’ve never even considered!...Overall, a great book full of ideas for your library and use.

OOOOOH The Essentials of Ribbon Needlepoint with River Silks 100% Silk Ribbon
Have you wanted to try River Silks Silk Ribbons but didn't know where to start? This book is excellent for getting you started. It even comes with practice ribbon and canvas! Written by Paul Krynicki of River Silks Ltd., this book specifically concentrates on River Silks Ribbon which will NOT fray, tear or run when you stitch with it because of the unique way that the silk ribbon is woven. You WILL love this ribbon. (Yes! We carry it!)

Colonial knots with different methods are covered as are the ribbon stitch, side ribbon stitch, rya stitch, buttonhole stitch, leaf stitch, lazy daisy, fly stitch, grab stitch, spider rose, Algerian eye and crosses and more. The rose you see here is on page 31 and is made with ribbon stitch and french knots.

See sample pages on the website www.riversilks.com/Site7/OOOOOH_THE_%20BOOK.html . Wirebound edge, 57 pages. Please be aware that there are NOT stitch graphs for silk ribbon or for the stitches that they suggest in this book - as needlepointers we are so very used to graphs that I that I should point this out.

Painted Canvas Embellishment: An Idea Book by Carole H Lake and Michael E. Boren
Here's the newest idea book to hit the needlepoint market for 2014! It starts out with a "little" reading material on choosing a painted canvas, what to think about before you start stitching, terms that you and I throw about loosely (like laying threads, etc.), and ideas for threads which includes current threads on the market today. This all goes through page 40! Then it goes into ideas for stitches and here I'm going to just go over the index because THAT will tell you what's in rest of the book. Faces, Eyes, Eyebrows, Noses and Mouths; Hair and Fur; Clothing; Rugs, Floors and Buildings; Leaves and Foliage; Snow and Ice; Wings; Stars and Starbursts; Motifs; Small Areas; Medium Areas, Large Areas, Very Large Areas and Backgrounds; Bands and Borders; Vertical Lines; Diagonal Lines; Outlining and Accenting Areas; Shading Stitches; Combination Stitches. Yes, there IS an index. Be aware that each page has multiple stitches on it or multiple instructions so you're getting more than one stitch per page! Also, the stitches are NOT numbered which will not bother a veteran stitcher. Wirebound to lay flat, 105 pages.

Potpourri of Pattern Encore, A Collection of Previously Unpublished Patterns for Canvas and Counted Thread Use by Ann Strite-Kurz
Comb bound, 130 pages. This book is intended to supplement material provided in Ann’s earlier books and most patterns presented are composite arrangements with two or more steps. Ann fans will understand that most of her stitch patterns are open but some are denser and using heavier threads will change your outcome even more. She gives an introduction and reviews techniques used, then includes 22 color pages of patterns and the front and back covers. In the rest of the chapters she explains the background patterns, border patterns, laid filings, composite patterns, diaper patterns and finally has an exercise in color comparisons. This book is akin to taking a class with Ann!

The introduction will help you set up your embroidery and then you'll choose the techniques of silk shading, goldwork, crewel work or blackwork. Each of the four techniques offers four embroidery projects with step by steop instructions and photographs. I took a good look at the goldwork one and think I could follow the first one.

Shapes of Needlepoint IV - Diagonals, Horizontals, Verticals by Sandra Arthur
PLEASE NOTE - IF YOUR ORDER IS BOOKS/CHARTS only we can ship Media Mail which is slower but costs much less. Ask for Media Mail in your comments section!

Sandy Arthur does it again. In her fourth book she suggests stitches for you to fit into areas by giving you the count of the stitches in the Table of Contents - for example, a Diagonal Cashmere will fit in a 3 x 5 thread area for a complete pattern. That in itself is handy but just in leafing through this book, you'll find plenty of stitches you wouldn't think of yourself. In most instances she shows them right and left facing which is very helpful for those of us who slow down when we have to mirror image something! This is a wire bound large book with 118 pages retailing for $48.95. We also have her prior books in stock.

Shapes of Needlepoint Series II, Diamonds-Hearts-Octagons-Stars by Sandra Arthur
This book features Diamonds, Hearts, Octagons and Stars. I don't know about you, but sometimes I think stars can be a real pain. You want them to be fun and perfect but you're tired of your same old tried and true stitches. This book has some pretty good ideas for stars and hearts. I don't stitch a lot of stop signs (octagons) but if I did a lot of designing myself, I can see that this would be a handy reference. The diamond shapes are great too. I can see using these as a filler, a border, or even in some larger painted areas. Like her last book, these are indexed both as shapes and by the size of the canvas threads they cover. HANDY! Spiral bound (in purple so as not to be mixed up with #1 in red), 117 pages with Super Large graphs, you're sure to want this in your library at $44.95. Also check out her Series I book on Circles, Squares, Triangles, Rectangles ($34.95) in case you want to get them both together.

Stitches for Effect by Suzanne Howren & Beth Robertson
This book is an invaluable reference for all needlepointers of any experience level. Where else can you look up "water" and have somebody suggest stitches and sometimes even fibers to use! I wholeheartedly suggest that you add all three books (Stitches for Effect, More Stitches for Effect, Even More Stitches for Effect) to your library. For traveling, use their handy small sized "Stitches To Go" which has all their stitches from every book graphed out without all the text. You'll LOVE these books. I do! All books are bound on the side so that you can lay them out flat.

Stitch-opedia, The Only Embroidery Reference You'll Ever Need
I've been looking for an overall stitch book for those who want to know a little of everything - and this is the latest one on the market, copyright April 2010. This book covers stumpwork, blackwork, canvas work, crewel work, freestyle, hardanger and pulled work. There are 30 projects in these techniques, a listing of stitches and of course the instructions for them! It's a hard back, wirebound book that will lie flat as you work and contains 224 pages. Color pictures abound! Each of the stitches are shown in color which makes them easier to see, but older eyes beware! The stitches are much smaller than we're used to seeing them shown. This is an EXCELLENT basic book for somebody that wants to try their hand at a variety of needlework and is a great gift for a niece, granddaughter or young person that shows an interest in hand work. The price and presentation is perfect for the younger generation and as are the projects which are a good balance of florals, contemporary embroidered art and traditional needlework.

Stumpwork by Royal School of Needlework Essential Stitch Guides
This book is written by Kate Sinton. I took a good look through it and it's got some great background, pictures, explanations and really good instructions. It reminds me of the A-Z books which takes you step-by-step through the process of creating stitches and specific pieces. They teach you how to frame up your work, simple design ideas, applique', flat stitches, raised surface stitches, needlelace, metal thread work, padding, slips, wrapping and how to attach found object. It's a great starter book that should inspire you with enough ideas to get you started. There were ideas in there that I'd never seen before like instead of just doing a buttonhole round circle "in the air" you'll do it around a dowel, knitting needle or some other round object. Well that would help! There is a section on applying stumpwork to canvas, and the non-canvas stumpwork can actually be used for canvas too. For example, the raised stem band they use to make the snail's body is exactly the same as you would do on canvas and they're doing it on fabric! This book is 112 pages in a spiral bound, hard back cover.
